It’s starting to look like there’s a reason everyone in Sweden has been in about a dozen bands each, there’s literally a billion death metal bands there to a population of 36*. Hailing from the city of Linköping, midway between death metal’s Mecca and Medina of Stockholm and Gothenberg, in 1998 just prior to both cities dissolving into a smug cliché of their own increasingly reactionary and reverential sound.

Despite owing more to the latter’s smooth, pinch-laden licks, Corporation 187 have a typically Swedish collective CV, but one that drags in influences from outside of ‘Slaughter Of The Soul’ with frontman Filip Carlsson and drummer Robert Eng both veterans of long-running and criminally overlooked black metallers Satanic Slaughter, and a very early incarnation of the band being a fanboyish Slayer cover outfit.

Cutting a savage melodic death swath through the global metal scene with two well received albums on Earache’s pioneering Wicked World imprint, best known for ‘discovering’ Hate Eternal and Decapitated, and tours with Arch Enemy, Lock-Up and a whole host of illegibly logoed heavyweights straight from the most hardened headbanger’s CD stack. Hold this kind of door open for most bands and they’ll charge right in, waving their arms, shrieking loudly and breaking things, not Corporation 187, who in late 2003/early 2004 seemingly dropped off the face of the earth to concentrate on taking as far a step away from the insipid, over-produced ocean of Gothenshred they’d found themselves associated with and writing new material that would establish them as individuals amid a scene of obvious, unabashed clones.

The culmination of this period of Zen-like introspection is teaming up with Anticulture Records to unleash ‘Newcomers Of Sin’, a creeping infection of slow, heavy, dark, hard-edged death/thrash that’d cause Carnal Forge or ‘One Kill Wonder’-era Haunted to spend a long hour cuddling a cushion, dribbling, muttering and rocking back and forth.
