As signifiers come, there’s few more vague, insulting and borderline racist as ‘J-Rock’. It seems to say that in the eyes of us glorious white imperialists, all the collective musical output of an entire nation can muster is some comedy pop-rock in broken English and funny hair.
Formed in September 2004, Tokyo’s Infected Malignity could well change the music industry’s perception of that, though forming somewhat ironically to play savage, ball-breaking US-style death metal, they underwent a series of line-up changes and debut full-length, ‘The Malignity Born From Despair’, on US label Unmatched Brutality before settling on the current line-up and evolving into a fiercely technical beast that whilst able to challenge the big names from the Western hemisphere embraces a unique and unmatched combination of slamming death, intoxicating groove and delicately melodic deathcore.
Evidently the rest of the world agrees, with regular touring across Europe and the US, as well as appearances at 2007’s California Deathfest in the US and Gothenburg Deathfest in Sweden, they were eventually picked up by cult Canadian label Galy, spiritual home of Despised Icon, Beneath The Massacre and Ion Dissonance, for North America and eclectic underdog Anticulture, champions of underground heroes Malefice, Gutworm, Slit and Happy Face, for Europe.
Undergoing one final line-up haemorrhage just as they put the final touches to their eagerly awaited sophomore ‘RE:bel’, the band found itself with a new vocalist and bassist in Kouhei Watanabe and Takaya Tamura. The five-piece, completed by founding guitarist and drummer Takura Sugano and Yuuto Sugano, stand poised to usher in a terrifying new era for Japanese music. A marginalised novelty no more, the concept of ‘J-Rock’ is dead Infected Malignity are ready to knock you off your feet and pound you into the headstone.
